Somatic Sunday: The Patterns that Repeat
How repeated reactions begin to tell a deeper story
Welcome back to Somatic Sunday, our gentle pause before the week begins.
Over the past few weeks, we’ve explored how overwhelm can build. How it rises within us, how it’s shaped by the spaces around us, and how our threshold can shift moment to moment.
Now, we can begin to look a little closer.
Not at what’s happening, but at what keeps happening.
The same feeling in different spaces.
A common response across different interactions.
Persisting defense mechanisms, even when the circumstances change.
As we become more familiar with our somatic signals, noticing these patterns is one way the nervous system begins to feel seen.
Somatically, noticing a recurring pattern can feel like:
A quiet sense of “I’ve been here before”
A heaviness when something familiar becomes clear
A small internal click, like pieces beginning to connect
Noticing a pattern doesn’t always feel empowering right away. It’s natural to feel sadness, frustration, or anger as we become aware of our natural responses.
But this awareness also allows our system to soften, deepening with each piece of the puzzle.
This week, spend time noticing when something feels familiar in your body.
Not the full situation.
Just the moment where something inside you pauses, shifts, or tightens in a way you recognize.
You might begin to notice it:
In certain conversations
In specific environments
In the way your body prepares or reacts
When that moment arises, gently ask yourself:
Where have I felt this before?
Let the question stay open.
You don’t need to search for an exact answer or connect every dot.
Just noticing the pattern is enough.
If you’re ready to explore this more deeply, my Somatic Snapshot Cards offer gentle guidance for recognizing these patterns as they arise, while Soft Girl Era and its sibling book, Mindmaps to the Heart support you in understanding the emotional layers beneath them.
